"Brother, I Can't Breathe" is a powerful reflection on an early childhood trauma that shaped Garvida's early understanding of vulnerability and the human body. Jasper recalls a harrowing incident at the age of six, when he and his older brother were involved in a jeepney accident on their way to school. The crash threw the passengers forward, causing a heavy impact that left Jasper breathless and in shock.
"I felt pain in my stomach and limbs from the force of the crash, leaving me breathless and in shock," he recalls. At the time, he struggled to comprehend what was happening to his body. "I felt scared of the unfamiliar pain and was in shock." In a desperate attempt to communicate, he tried to say, "I cannot breathe" to his brother, but no words would come. Sensing his distress, his brother instinctively pressed his hand against Jasper's chest, helping him regain his breath.
This moment of fear and vulnerability marked a turning point in Jasper's life, influencing his later exploration of the fragility of the human form. "Brother, I Can't Breathe" captures the essence of that traumatic experience, highlighting the delicate boundary between life and loss.
